What is a Domain Name?

An example of a Domain Name is iserve.co.nz, this is a unique address that identifies you or your business on the Internet. The Domain Name can be used for a web site and/or e-mail.

 

How do I register a Domain Name in New Zealand?

What are the costs involved in having a Domain Name?

There is an annual fee for registering a Domain Name, iSERVE charge $38 including GST for this.

If you wish to only have e-mail associated with this domain then our Free Domain Hosting Plan may be the best choice, it allows you to have all of your e-mail redirected to any e-mail address of your choice.

If you wish to have a web site with your Domain Name then check out our Basic Web Hosting Plan if you only have one web site or our Enhanced Web Hosting Plan for people requiring more than one web site.

 

When I register a domain though you, can I make changes to it?

When you register a domain through iSERVE we set up an account for you at www.idm.net.nz (the ISERVE Domain Manager). You will recieve all the details required to login to this system in an E-Mail after the registration is complete.

There are a lot of scams surrounding Domain names, how do I know its ok to deal with you?

iSERVE are an authorised Registrar in the .nz domain space.  This means that Domain Name Commissioner (DNC) has authorised iSERVE to register Domain Names for the general public, and manage those domains directly with the Registry.

You can confirm this by viewing a list of current Registrars which can be found at the DNC Web site.


Can I save money by using iSERVE instead of Domainz to register a domain?

Yes you can! iSERVE offer Domain Names at $38 including GST.  Currently Domainz will charge you $61.87 - and many other Registrar offer prices ranging from $40-$200 per annum.


I have already registered my Domain Name elsewhere, how can I benefit from your reduced rate?

You can save money on the yearly renewal fees by transferring your Domain Name to iSERVE.  This can be done by simply clicking here.


Will my Domain Name be cancelled automatically if I don't renew annually?

Yes your Domain will automatically cancel if you choose not to renew it.


How long can I have a Domain Name for, can anyone else register it?

Once you have registered your Domain Name it is yours until it enters a cancelled state. Even after it has been cancelled, no one else can register it for a 90-day period from the date of cancellation.


What happens if I register a Domain Name and mis-spell it?

There is a 5-day grace period with all Domain Name registrations.  If you find you have misspelt a Domain Name, you can log into the IDM and cancel it without incurring any charges.


How do I change my contact details for the domain?

You can log into the IDM with your Domain Name and Password and update your contact details.


Who owns the Domain Name that I register through iSERVE?

When you register a Domain Name you are asked to put in your details, The domain will be registered to the person who's name you put in the "Registrant Contact" field of the registration form. iSERVE will appear as your Registrar, this indicates that we will be billing you for the Domain Name.


How long can a Domain Name be and what characters can I use?

A .nz Domain Name can use only letters, numbers, or a dash (-) The maximum amount of characters in a Domain Name must not exceed 63 characters.


What .nz Domain Names can be registered?

The following domains are available in New Zealand
.co.nz Organisations pursuing commercial aims and purposes.
.net.nz Organisations and service providers directly related to the NZ Internet.
.org.nz Not-for-profit organisations.
.school.nz Primary, secondary and pre-schools and related organisations.
.ac.nz Tertiary educational institutions and related organisations.
.maori.nz Any party that relates to or represents Maori culture, business or other matters.
.geek.nz Vanity Domain available to anyone.
.gen.nz Individuals and other organisations not covered elsewhere.
.iwi.nz Maori tribe, typified by a Trust Board.

Once I have registered my Domain Name, when can I start using it?

The Registry perform a "zone push" every hour, on the hour.  This process allows the up-to-date information (like a new registration or transfer) to the be accessed by all internet providers. Once all internet  providers have obtained the new information the site will be live to all  visitors and you can begin using it.


How long can I register a Domain Name for?

Currently you can register a Domain Name for 6 months, 12 months, 2, 5 and 10 years.


Can you register non .nz Domain Names, eg .com, .net, .org etc?
